OMG!!! First of all I would like to say thank you to Gordon!!!!!

I was actually able to upload and paste a pic. You guys don't know how proud I am of myself right now!

Is this an African or Long-billed Pipit? The pic was taken in Pilanesburg or Rietvlei or Rhino and Lion Park (sorry I struggle to keep up with where all my pics were taken, I blame the pipits!!!

Can anyone explain to me the difference between the two and how I can better identify them in the field from now on. Newman's isn't helping as much as I would like.

As for your bird, I am not 100% certain what it is as I would need to see a couple of pics. With pipits you also need to watch their behaviour for a while. How do the move around? How many tail wags do they do? What kind of habitat are they in?

Did you manage to get any other pictures of the bird? or what it's behaviour at all?

Cheers,
Gordon

The three important things with pipits are bil base colour, back markings and tail wagging. Unfortunately two of hose features cannot be determined from the one image. Probably going to be difficult to conclusively ID on one image.

OOPS, that's a bird I only wanted to post later, but it would be great if you could help me with this one as well. There isn't a pipit in my Newman's that's this distinctive in its facial and breast markings. [/color:1xk2fm5o]

The second pic is the only different shot I have. The other shots are from very similar angles and therefore futile to paste.

The first pic in this message is interesting not so much for the blurred white and brown bird, which I think may be a Martin or a Flycatcher (any ideas?), but the Blue thingy off to the left side of the blurred white and brown bird. It seems to have a black neck. Any ideas if this is actually a bird, or perhaps an alien? Should I be sending this pic to a secret government agency instead? If it is an alien, how much do you think I could get for this pic? And what did the alien do to the little blurred white and brown bird? Sooo many questions, so little time.

Hi Grey Heron,

Your "other" bird, in the second photo is actually a Dusky Lark, the Pipit, in the first and third photos, could be Long-billed Pipit??? (I am going to bail on this one, it is either an African or a Long-billed but I would feel uncomfortable calling it..., the way it is standing would make me think Long-billed but I have seen African do the same thing in very long grass...)

The bird in your alien infestation picture is most likely a Flycatcher and probably a Marico Flycatcher.

As for the alien, are you sure its not Elvis pretending to be an alien who is in turn pretending to be a blue smudge in the background?

Cheers,
Gordon

OMG Gordon!!!!

You're sooooo right about Elvis, thank you for that identification, I didn't know how I was going to sleep tonight without knowing what the blue smudge was

I personally think that it is a long-billed pipit, especially the bill and facial markings.

Thank you for the Dusky Lark id. I had a suspicion it was a dusky lark but my old Neuman's book shows it as a very dark brown plumage and not the rufous it appears on the picture.

Thank you so much!!!...
but wait there's more. Tomorrow afternoon I will load more pics that will make you cry trying to id them (at least I have begun crying trying to id them, perhaps you are stronger of spirit than me
