I saw this fellow at Highlands Wilderness near Beal Bela over the weekend. Initially I thought Jackal Buzzard, but something just does not feel right!!

Any ideas, I know the photos are shocking, but it flew off as I was trying to get into a better position

Justin

Largish eye and smallish head says to me European Honey-buzzard.

Maybe send it to Trevor Hardaker for his Rare bird report and he can confirm but I would go with EHB.

The only other Raptor(s) with that colouring would possibly Ayer's/African Hawk-Eagle but this look all wrong for either of those... Also head is too small/giss wrong for a young Black-chested Snake-eagle

Apparently the shape is wrong for a European Honey Buzzard, and it is more than likely a Wahlberg Eagle.

So my search for a EHB contunues........

Justin

Hi Justin,

Definitely not Wahlbergs Eagle as they have feathered tarsi. Note the last photo where you can clearly see the bare skin.

I have taken the liberty of adjusting the photo to try and make out any tail pattern.

My first thoughts were that it is a Buzzard and more specifically a juv Steppe. (EHB would have a different tail pattern.)

However after looking more closely.... another possibility is Western Banded Snake Eagle??? The large head with a pale eye, bare tarsi and what appears to be a large dark terminal bar with a broad white/light bar above on the tail...... Though I would prefer much clearer pictures to make that call!!!!

That is my two cents worth... <!-- s:spin: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/spin.gif" alt=":spin:" title="Spinning" /><!-- s:spin: -->

Hi Everyone,

Has Black-chested Snake Eagle been considered? Possibly an immature in transitional moult into adult? The white leg feathering looks good for this species, along with head shape, eye colour & tail pattern. Just a thought, not a definitive ID.

Cheers,

Dewi.

I am seriously considering Black Chested Snake Eagle, espicially as there is a pair in the area.

Hi Justin,

Where is Highlands? I'll be in S.A. in June, so need some advice on where to go in the Gauteng area, preferably safe areas where I can wander about with my camera.

Cheers,

Dewi.
