Here are some pics of our recent trip up North, including BBD around Kalizo in Namibia. Some lifers, some just stunning!

Carmine Bee-eaters at the breeding colony (est. 4,000 birds)

Steppe Buzzard - Chobe Park

Slaty Egret - Kalizo BBD

Schalow's Turaco-lourie - Katima Mulilo

Fish Eagle after rain storm - Chobe river

Giant Kingfisher - Kasane-Nata road

Cape Vulture - North of Pretoria - note pale eyes

An enjoyable trip, including an offroad excursion along Hunter's Road (is that a road!!).

We saw a group of vultures, which were arguing over what appeared to be a dead Spring Hare. (Not much to go around, lads!) The group included White Backed, Hooded, White Headed (ad. and Juv.), Lappet Faced and one Cape Vulture, plus 1 Marabou Stork. Damn, no Ruppells! The size difference when they are all together is pretty apparent.

Directly across the road, two Crowned Cranes strode into view.

I can't wait to get back into the bush, getting back to the bustle of Gauteng a bit of an anticlimax to a trip like this!

Cheers for now

Niall.

Hi Niall,

What an amazing area!

I love your photo's, particularly the one with the different species of vulture all in one frame. The size and shape of the species show very nicely!

One day, I will venture up there... :-)

Cheers
Gordon

Niall.

Know this is an old post but while looking for birding info on the Kasane region, I noticed the Buzzard and was wondering if this is not a Red-necked Buzzard that have recently been identified to occur in the area.

Anyone with experience on Red-necked Buzzard?

Unfortunately this is a Steppe Buzzard - it has very different plumage on the chest and belly to Red-necked Buzzard.
