It's that time of year again when UK birders, particularly along the east coast, are out in force hoping for some rarities as the annual southwards migration of sub-arctic species is in full swing. Recently I have visited three RSPB reserves and other localities in the hope of adding a lifer or two. Below some of the photos I have taken of both resident and migratory birds.

At RSPB Minsmere in Suffolk ......

male Common Teal

male Gadwall

On the causeway out to Holy island in Northumberland .....

Grey Plover

Eurasian Curlew

On Thornham Beach in Norfolk adjacent to RSPB Titchwell Marsh .....

Ruddy Turnstone in winter plumage

and my favourite photo this year after pursuing a flock of 50+ birds along the beach until they 'posed' -
Bar-tailed Godwit

back at RSPB Minsmere and photographed at great distance but good enough to clearly identify a species of which only 100-200 arrive in the UK each winter, and yes one of the lifers I was hoping for -
Horned Lark (ssp flava)

Finally, no pre-Christmas post would be complete without a European Robin, this curious individual following me around at RSPB Titchwell Marsh in Norfolk.
