Slaty Egret

Postby Hanno Pretorius » Tue Aug 14, 2007 3:48 pm

I wish to request a discussion based around Slaty Egret sightings in South Africa.
I have read numerous reports about Slaty Egret sightings at Marievale Bird Sanctuary.
Where in South Africa have these egrets been sighted and is it normal for them to venture so far South?

Hi Hanno,

I have missed seeing the Slaty at Marievale more than 10 times now. I always seem to arrive just after the someone else has seen the bird.

There is a reserve to the west of Johannesburg where it was seen about 1 1/2 years ago and it has also been seen at Nylsvlei though not recently?

Has anyone else got information?

Cheers,
Gordon

Not in SA but Mark paxton reported large numbers of them in the Caprivi.

I also know there was a birds that caused a heated debate and turned out to be a juvenile Slaty Egret in the western cape.

Cheers,
Doug

Slaty spots

Postby Hanno Pretorius » Sun Aug 19, 2007 7:26 pm

Other spots where Slaty Egret has been sighted in recent years include:
Roets Dam on the Zaagkuildrift, north of Pretoria, 18 Feb 07
Rust de Winter
Marievale Bird Sanctuary
Interesting fact: According to Roberts Birds of South Africa 4th ED, 3rd impression, this species was originally described from Potchefstroom!

Hi Hanno,
Slaty Egret sightings seem to take place mainly in summer after good rains. The Rust de Winter sighting took place during the Greater Frigatebird spectacle a few years back and there have also been sightings at Elandsvlei (Bapsfontein) and at Onderstepoort in recent years. In each instance the bird stayed at the locality for a few days, so keep your eyes and ears open for records and then move quickly!

Regards,
André

Thanks Andre,
Very interesting indeed. I'm glad to hear that most sightings seem to have been near Pretoria (where I live!)

Hi Guys

I noticed this posting on SANParks website:

5 days ago! Well the birds could be anywhere in the Blesbok spruit system by now.
