New Zealand Storm-petrel

Postby Doug » Mon May 07, 2012 12:01 pm

HI All.

Steve Clark, one of our Australian Simply Birders, sent me this pic taken on a pelagic trip off the Australian coast. Its official status is "Highly probable" as it has not yet been vetted but this is Australia's first record of this species that is incredibly rare and thought to have been extent and was only rediscovered in 2003 with a tiny handful of sightings.

Regards,
Doug.

G'day all

The story of the rediscovery of the New Zealand Storm-Petrel can be read here:

http://www.nzseabirds.com/nzstormpetrel_news.php

and here:

http://blog.tepapa.govt.nz/2012/03/03/z ... ing-sites/

The birds seen off south-west Victoria on Sunday was the first for that state but is not the first for Australian waters. There have been sightings off the eastern coast from southern NSW to southern Queensland.

Cheers
Steve Clark
