A short worth-while trip from San Jose is to the Sarapiqui river area. Jump on a bus to Puerto Viejo or rent a car. Stop at any hotel along the river and ask if you can bird in their gardens or simply walk of the road and do some bundu-bashing. The birding is exceptional and 40 to 50 species in 2 hours guaranteed! The Lowland species here is easy to spot, the forest birds gives a pain in the neck :) . So do this if you have limited time, a bad neck and strong nerves ( I almost lost it with so many birds to tick )

We host birders for free! Unbelievable but true. http://sekororo.blat.co.za Friends of birds are friends of us.
