Buckley’s Hole, a tranquil lagoon on the southern tip of Bribie Island, is a haven for birdwatchers. The Buckley’s Hole Birdhide provides an excellent vantage point to observe a wide variety of bird species in their natural habitat. My recent visit was filled with fascinating encounters, from the busy activity of a Sacred Kingfisher to the serene presence of Black Swans with their young.
Birdwatching Highlights
Upon arriving at the birdhide, I was immediately struck by the activity on the water and along the shoreline. The first sighting was a Sacred Kingfisher, perched on a low branch near the water’s edge. It was captivating to watch this vibrant bird dive repeatedly, skillfully catching small fish and returning to its perch to enjoy its meal.Further out on the lagoon, a pair of Black Swans were gracefully gliding across the water, accompanied by five adorable cygnets. The sight of these elegant birds and their young, moving in perfect synchrony, was a highlight of the day. Nearby, a group of Dusky Moorhens and Eurasian Coots foraged along the water’s edge, their dark plumage contrasting with the greenery surrounding the lagoon.
Diving ducks, including Hardheads and Australasian Grebes, were also present, intermittently disappearing beneath the surface in search of food. The lagoon was teeming with activity as Little Black Cormorants paddled by, occasionally diving for fish, while an Australian Pelican floated majestically, its large bill poised for action.
A Great Egret was a picture of patience and precision as it slowly stalked through the shallows, eventually striking with lightning speed to catch its prey. The sight of this tall, elegant bird in action was truly mesmerizing.
The air above the lagoon was filled with the swift movements of Welcome Swallows, darting over the water in pursuit of insects. Their acrobatic flights were a joy to watch, adding to the lively atmosphere. High above, Australian Terns soared gracefully, occasionally swooping down towards the water, adding to the diversity of birdlife present at Buckley’s Hole.
Conclusion
My visit to Buckley’s Hole Birdhide was a memorable experience, offering a close encounter with a variety of bird species in a serene and picturesque setting. From the Sacred Kingfisher’s fishing antics to the peaceful presence of Black Swans and their cygnets, the day was filled with moments that showcased the beauty and diversity of birdlife in this unique location.Buckley’s Hole is a must-visit for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts alike, offering not only the opportunity to observe a wide range of species but also to enjoy the tranquility and natural beauty of Bribie Island’s southern tip.
Cheers,
Gordon
